The Lobby

lobby
I attended an instructor's conference today. While I waited for my session to begin, I sat in the lobby and sketched this awkward view of the escalators surrounded by some truly wonderful tree ferns located on the escalator walls. The trees sat in a small planters box along the walls that also contained some green vining plants. I can't imagine how these specimens get watered!! But the plants were real enough, as I could see spore cases on the undersides of the fern leaves!

I must be in a kind of 'wonkiness' since I didn't quite notice the oddities in the sketch until after I added watercolor and scanned it. My attempts to 'loosen up' didn't quite reach the 'looseness' I was hoping to achieve, so I suppose letting the 'wonky' remain is moving me a bit off the 'perfectionist' square I tend to sit on.

In all fairness, I didn't have as quite as much time as I really needed for getting a better perspective drawn ... I ran into my college's president TWICE -- and he even came over to see what I was doing and sat down to chat! and, well, I decided after that, that this sketch was DONE! LOL

Well, from what I've seen in artist's sketch books -- they are not perfect in perspective, shading, etc. They are just quick sketches to retain the memory and work on later as more evolved drawings/paintings so I think "you done good girl!" I especially liked the way the floor was done;don't know why I keyed on that but it just caught my eye as very realistic, leading up to the vegetation.
You amaze me with your ability to sketch wherever and whenever -- a sign of a true artist -- seeing art everywhere!
Hugs,
Lorraine

I agree 100% with Lorraine. I also noticed the floor tiles! They really anchor the greenery. Your preparedness and ability to sketch ANYWHERE is so amazing to me!

Lin, I didn't even notice the wonkiness, I thought the perspective looked good. I think it looks great and so in the moment.

Very nice work.

My theory is that the plants are not real but are plastic - you can get some very realistic plastic plants now, and if you change them every couple of months no-one realises they aren't real:)

great job with glass and perspective - two very challenging tasks in one!

Good job, Lin. Did the conference go well?

I can't see the wonkiness, maybe you'd have to be there to see the difference. Good for you for doing the drawing even with the president getting in the way twice.
