Father's Day

Father's Day
Originally uploaded by linfrye
When I think of my father, what comes instantly to mind are tools --! Dad was always repairing, fixing, mending something -- and could do it exceptionally well! My son, as a child, was always breaking his toys, and my dad, patient as Job, would be fixing those too. And as things go, my son, once the breaker, has now become the 'mender' and works as that for a living! My husband can fix anything -- and often can detect what needs mendiing by my describing the funny sound!

Tools have become a tradition in our home and family. But when I think of "Tools", their meaning extends even further than simply something that can be used to 'repair.'

I think of tools also as guidelines, instrutions, examples that are set by those whom we learn from, emulate or follow. Tools for living, doing art, working with others, getting something done, getting from place to place, etc.

So today, for all those father's -- the dads, the husbands, the sons, the brothers, uncles, sons-in-law, godfathers, instructors, repair folks, leaders -- May this be a most happy and restful day! And THANK YOU for providing the 'tools' that help make life worth living!

Beautiful painting Lin! I always admire men that can fix things, it's quite a talent. In general, men who take the time to do this usually have respect and value many other things in life.

I loved reading this post, and your illustrations are excellent. My father was hopeless with tools, as is my youngest son, while my husband is pretty good. I wonder if these things are inherited, like brown eyes?;;;

A Wonderful post befitting Father's day. You bring back such nice memories of my father too, because he was, figuratively speaking, born and died with a tool in his hand!
Great sketches.

I had a dream, many years ago (my father died when I was 8) that I was going away and "taking some of my father's tools." He, too, could fix almost anything. I thank God for the tools that my father gave me, and continues to give me, I believe.

Great sketch! My husband is the same way about fixing things. My oldest son, when he was a toddler, would take things apart to see how they worked. He still does this today even as a teenager!
