Journal - Sketching Southport houses ... Yesterday friends and I found a shady place to sit and practice sketching and painting some of the houses we admire in Southport. It was warm, but we found a quiet corner in the shade to set up and sketch early in the day. While the hour we chose kept us cool, there were shadows plaguing our subject ... and because returning to plein air is still challenging for me and my focus was on getting the 'lines' right, I didn't stop to think about changing the light or colors. I tried too hard to remain 'true' to the view before me. I also started with pencil and followed this with paint and, thus obscuring all those careful lines I drew. Definitely a learning curve ....
