The Grand(s) Sketch

Sketching my grandchildren is probably my supreme challenge ... but I keep attempting them expecting that ONE DAY I'll look at my sketch and be really pleased at the results. But not yet .. SIGH. I just love the images of these children at the butterfly house, and so I've used them as a model to keep practicing.

I also attempted a sketch from a photo my husband took of me reading to Emily and Nick. I thought it might be a bit easier if I didn't have to contend with facial details--HA! I sketched it twice and still missed on Nick's face!! GEEZ!

I think I may assign myself a 'portrait' or two a week to get myself a bit more practice ... Meantime, I'll have to be content with 'sketchstyle' grands ...

I'll bet that one quick glance at these charming sketches whisk you back into the intensity of loving feelings. Keep on with the great practice.
I remind you..you remind me, and so it goes. All good.

Wonderful sketches Lin, they really look like the chidren, your arms are in proportion, mine never are. Great job and I wish mine were that age again. Wonderful to have your journal entries with them.

Question for you , Lin, What size paper are you trying to use to do these? I ask because I find myself, over and over again, trying to work something that I want to see the detail in, on too small of paper. It is kind of like making doll clothes (if you have ever sewn) they look like they would be easier because they are small but in reality they are so much harder because every stitch counts and it is hard to work in such a tight space. Just something that might help, we seem pleased with what you are doing but you seem like you are struggling to convey something that isn't quite coming across. I do love your renditions of the Grands.

Cool sketches...and, yes, keeping grandchildren still is harder than cats!!

Look back several months and compare those sketches of grands with these. I think you'll see that you have indeed improved!! Look at your improvements rather than comparing your work to the perfection that is in your mind. I can say this because this is my struggle too -- the art I envision and the way it comes out on paper aren't the same. LOL!! Just keep on practicing!!

I love these sketches! They are very much alive and I´m sure you´ll remember the exact moment when you look at them a few years from now.
Nice going!

I so enjoyed visiting your blog today. Your sketches of the grands are utterly charming and I wouldn't change a thing about them. Just keep working and you'll get to where you want to be, but I cannot imagine sketches done with more love than these. They are treasures.

I love these sketches and paintings of your grandchildren. I understand the compulsion... my two boys have always been what I am most inspired to sketch.
