Poppy Field

Poppy Field

Landscape painting for me lately has challenged me with so many decisions as to what to include, what to leave out, how much detail to put in, how loose, how tight, etc. I love fields of poppies as they so remind me of the Italy I love ... and so this particular sketch challenged me even more because of my emotional attachment to the subject.

I wanted to keep the foreground simple -- yet indicative of 'poppies' ... so I've included only a smattering of 'flower' shapes ...

I"m not sure it works or reads as a 'poppy field' .....I like the composition and the reds ... my uncertainty lies with the treatment of the foreground ... I'm still thinking ...

When I was taking lessons I could always do a reasonable job with the sky and mountains but when it got to the foreground, I was stumped. I think it's the most difficult part unless you are working from a specific photo and can "copy." I like what you've done; it doesn't say "poppy" to me, but I think it goes well with the rest of the painting -- in being loose and suggestive!

I love the suggestion of poppy's here. I think you've made, what surely was a difficult task, the red and green look like it was not fighting each other. Great job Lin.

It looks beautiful but I have to tell you, a field of poppies in Arizona means the yellow Mexican poppies and this year will probably be fabulous since we had enough winter rains.

Anyway, I digress, I love this landscape.

I do like the painting, I don't know that I would know that it was a field of poppies if you hadn't said so. What do you think about putting one or two defined poppies up at the very front edge, at one corner or the other or possibly a half a poppie? Just a thought...
